University Technical Colleges
University Technical Colleges (UTCs) were an idea brought to life by Lord Baker and the late Lord Dearing. UTCs have received cross-party political support which has resulted in a commitment from the coalition government to establish 24 UTCs over the life time of this Parliament.
The Black Country UTC, the first to formally carry the ‘UTC’ brand, welcomed its first cohort of 14 and 16 year old students in September 2011. It specialises in Engineering and Science and is sponsored by Walsall College and the University of Wolverhampton. PKF were appointed as project managers in January 2011. The project was highly accelerated and required intensive work and focus by everyone involved. This resulted in its successful opening in just 9 months.
PKF’s unrivalled depth of UTC experience, coupled with our business and financial expertise, ensures that we are fully aware of the challenges faced in opening such an establishment. This enables sponsors to concentrate on developing the outstanding, innovative and truly integrated curriculum that UTCs offer their students.
To date, PKF are the only Project Managers to have opened three 14-19 specialist academies, namely The JCB Academy, Black Country UTC, and Birmingham Ormiston Academy. This placed us in a strong position to develop another unique UTC in East London - The Hackney UTC, which specialises in Digital Media and Health and is sponsored by Hackney Community College with partners including BT, University of East London and Homerton Teaching Hospital. The UTC is due to open in September 2012 on the site of Hackney Community College.
Experience tells us that each UTC will have its own unique offering.
