IP Telephony


One of the most talked about technologies of recent years has been IP telephony. IP telephony enables a telephone system to use the same cabling, protocols and transmission methods as a data network. As a result, only one network is required for both voice and data. Not only can this provide significant cost savings but, more importantly, can provide exceptional facilities over existing infrastructure.

PKF has been using an Avaya IP telephone system for three years. This allows all telephones to truly operate as one large single system rather than disparate systems linked together to provide inter office functionality.

Local exchange lines have been retained. However, the centralised approach allows any call to be easily routed to any extension in any office. In fact, extensions cease to be office based and PKF employees can log in to any telephone handset in any office and that phone will become their own extension with their own preferences and settings. There are even facilities to allow extensions to be operated from outside the offices.

Comprehensive continuity features ensure that the system is resilient to equipment and network failures ensuring that customer service is maintained at all times.

Depending on call volumes and call patterns, IP telephony can deliver cost savings in a number of ways including savings on inter office calls.
