Corporate Finance
We have conducted due diligence work to assist charity mergers. Key factors that we considered included advice on how to structure the deal, staffing issues, taxation and VAT.

VAT
Our VAT specialists worked with a healthcare charity that was entering into a residential and daycare contract with a local authority. We advised the charity on structuring the service delivery so that over £500,000 irrecoverable VAT could be saved on construction costs and substantial ongoing VAT savings could be made during the duration of the contract.

PAYE
Following a PAYE inspection HMRC sought a tax settlement from a charity totalling some £250,000. This arose in connection with non deduction of tax and NIC from casual staff, students and from termination payments. After negotiation our employer compliance unit was able to conclude a settlement at under £50,000 inclusive of interest and penalties.

Tax
A number of charities face potential tax problems arising out of the tax legislation concerning substantial donors. Recently we were able to circumvent a potential tax claw back for one charity by careful phasing of payments and transactions.

Accounting
On a first year audit of a large and well-respected charity, during our initial set up work, we discussed the procedures operating in the grants department. We quickly confirmed that the accounting treatment of grant commitments had been incorrect and again were able to make recommendations on a timely basis, and before we commenced our audit planning.

IT
We led a major IT development project for a large charity and supported this by undertaking the recruitment of accountancy staff qualified to operate the new systems.

Risk Management
Undertook a major assessment of business risk for a charity client, working with management to identify and prioritise their risks and controls and assisted in developing a monitoring process.
